The T series MG Midget was put back into production after the war in the form of the TC. Little had changed from the pre-war TB and it was considered something of a stop-gap model, lasting until 1949 when the much improved TD was unveiled.
Based on a stiffer chassis taken from the Gerald Palmer designed Y type saloon, it came with independent front suspension, rack and pinion steering and easyclean steel wheels. The TD remained in production until 1953 when its replacement, the more modern looking TF hit the streets. Contemporary road tests managed a top speed of 77mph from its 1,250cc XPAG engine, with 60mph taking 18.2 seconds from rest.
Some 30,000 TDs were produced in all, making it their most successful model to date, MG’s export market proving so strong that just 1,656 stayed at home!
This October 1952 model has been in the hands of the vendor for 22 years. Imported from the San Francisco area in 1989, it was fully restored to a high standard by a Bromsgrove based restoration specialist. Converted from left to right hand drive at the same time, the car has seen relatively little use since, having been well cared for and regularly maintained by a local, well respected Morgan specialist.
Starting instantly when driven to take the photographs, it felt remarkably taut and rattle free, a testament to the quality of its earlier restoration. Complete with side screens and hood, it is only being offered for sale due to a lack of use and storage space.
Taxed until April 2015 and MOT exempt becuase of its age, this lovely example can be driven away by its lucky new owner.
