With its massively wide rear haunches, Coke-bottle hips and oval exhausts, the 993 is considered by many to be the best looking 911 of all.

Launched in 1993 and remaining in production until 1998, it was the last Porsche to feature an air-cooled engine and the last to retain the classic 911 silhouette – giving it a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts. The good looks continued inside with a re-designed interior featuring new seats, better heating and ventilation and improved dashboard fabrics. For the first time, airbags were also fitted as standard.

More than just a pretty face, it was also the first 911 to handle safely on the limit thanks to its wider track and the adoption of an all-alloy multi-arm rear suspension attached to an all-alloy subframe. Lift off mid-bend and, instead of flying off backwards into the scenery as earlier 911s were wont to do, this car would just tuck in and hold the line.

Performance from the 272bhp 3.6-litre flat-six engine was suitably authoritative, crushing the 0-60 time in just 5.3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 168mph. The new engine featured lavish use of exotic metals, such as magnesium for the fan housing, and a strengthened camshaft along with lighter pistons – it also sounded magnificent with a spine-tingling metallic bark. A sophisticated Bosch ignition system was employed to keep the engine running as sweetly as it's makers intended. Built like the proverbial brick outhouse, it was also utterly dependable and was one of the very few supercars that you could genuinely use every day.

Dating from 1997, this 993 Carrera 2 has covered only 54,400 miles from new and is in highly original condition throughout. It has the semi-automatic Tiptronic gearbox that can be left in automatic mode or shifted manually using buttons mounted on the steering wheel. It is fitted with 18” Porsche C4 wheels with Pirelli P Zeros all round, 285 wide at the back, 225 at the front which look most purposeful and really set it apart from the crowd. The interior is in grey leather and is also very clean and tidy.

The car was supplied new to Japan so has no early service history but has been in the UK since 2001 where it was serviced by Addspeed Porsche, Horsham, at 37,166 miles in November 2005 when all the belts were changed, and again at PCT Porsche, Coventry, at 41,128 miles in August 2009. There are also other bills for subsequent maintenance and it is due to be freshly serviced before the sale.

Recently fitted with a Sony Bluetooth hands-free phone/CD/iPod stereo system, the car is said to drive beautifully and will be sold with a new MOT and tax until the end of the year. Given the way values of all air-cooled 911s have rocketed in recent months, it looks excellent value at the guide price suggested.

AMENDMENT: Please note that there is some confusion regarding the chassis number of this vehicle. According to records held by Porsche GB the chassis number stated on this website and on the V5C actually relates to a 1997 Porsche 993 Carrera S in Glacier Blue. We have had the car examined by an independent engineer who states that the chassis number shown on the car (on a sticker inside the driver's door, on a plaque under the bottom left of the windscreen and on a metal tag under the fuel tank) all match the numbers stated on the website and on the V5C and do not appear to have been tampered with in any way.
