The long running MG Midget started life as an updated version of the Donald Healey inspired Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite.
Growing more comfortable and civilised as the years passed, the final version ended up with the 1491cc engine from the Triumph Spitfire, wind up windows, external door handles, servo brakes and of course the rubber bumpers that so characterised these last of the line Midgets.
Midget by name but far from Midget by nature, it was a nimble performer, eventually disappearing from MG’s line-up in 1980 by which time a colossal 266,000 had been delivered, 20% of these in its final 1500 form.
This 1978 model has been carefully modified by removing the rather unloved rubber bumpers, its replacement stainless grille making it look like an earlier model. The car has been well prepared, sporting a particularly clean engine bay, while on the inside, a partial wooden dash and sports steering wheel complement its smart red carpets.
This eminently practical classic is MOTd until May 2015 and looks like a lot of fun to drive.
