In production from 1966 until 2006, the Datsun Sunny, later to be known as the Nissan Sunny, was made in a truly bewildering range of models, specs and sizes and in mind-numbing numbers.
In 1982, Datsun UK unveiled their first front-wheel drive Sunny targeted squarely at the traditional saloon car buyer. Fitted with an unburstable 1,488cc engine of quite extraordinary reliability, everything else inside the car worked perfectly too - every time - so customers were prepared to forgive the Datsun's uncanny ability to look a little more rusty each time they went out onto the drive to unlock it in the morning.
Luckily this 31-year-old Sunny 1.5GL Auto was always safely tucked up at night and, on the few occasions it was allowed out, it hardly ever went anywhere, covereing an average of only 1,150 miles per year. Dry stored under a sheet in its previous owner’s bus depot for most of its life, it got regular servicing from the garage staff, barely putting tyre to tarmac from one year to the next, hence the remarkable state of preservation.
The total mileage still reads under 37,000 miles, with 12 old MOTs showing that under 1,000 of these have been added over the last 5 years. MOTd until October 2015 it is one of just ten 1.5GLs left on the road in Britain (according to the website How Many Left) and comes with a Haynes manual and a file of bills and invoices.
With so few popular 1980s cars left on our roads, these low mileage originals are starting to get noticed amongst forward-looking collectors. This is the first Datsun Sunny we have had in one of our sales for a decade, and with so few left in circulation, may well be the last!
