In 1958 Raleigh announced their first moped, the RM1 Runabout, at the Savoy Hotel in London.
It had a 50cc engine made by BSA with a single speed clutch-less transmission. The Runabout remained in production for a dozen years, going through various stages of development (RM1 to RM12) until it was finally discontinued in 1971.
The RM6 model came out in 1963 and, according to the adverts of the time, offered 175mpg and a 28mph cruising speed from its 1.7bhp engine for just 46 guineas.
This super, original bike has had just one owner from new and has recently been fired-up and run up and down the private lane near the vendor’s garage. It now needs carefully rubbing over with an ‘oily rag’ and probably some new brake blocks too as part of its recommissioning process, that in our opinion should focus on conservation rather than restoration. There can’t be many more of these delightfully original 50 year old discoveries left to come out of the woodwork.
