BSA Ltd of Smallheath, Birmingham, introduced the ‘Sloper’ for the 1927 model year and started a fashion that was to be copied by many of its contemporaries for the handsome inclined configuration.
The Sloper also featured a trend-setting saddle tank that afforded the rider a lower seating position with something to grip between his (or her) knees. For 1930 chrome bright work was added to the tank and a new frame with a forged steel backbone. No fewer than 18 different models of BSA were catalogued for the 1930 season, six of which featured the inclined Sloper engine layout. Slopers were available in both OHV and side valve versions and continued in production until 1935.
This S31-10 De Luxe OHV model Sloper was purchased by the Stondon Museum in 1994, according to the receipt in the paperwork file, and was last on the road and MOTd in the same year. It comes with a V5C which states that it was manufactured in 1931 and first registered in November 1990. There are also two copies of the ‘BSA Front-wheel Drive’ magazine from 1991, although quite what relevance these have will have to be figured out by the purchaser.
This is an opportunity to obtain an iconic 1930s sporting OHV machine that will reward the new owner once it has been recommissioned and readied for the road.
PLEASE NOTE: This machine has been re-registered.
