Stretched from the original 1948-designed 500cc parallel twin, the 700cc Royal Enfield engine had only been eclipsed in engine size by the Vincent Twin, which had disappeared in 1955, and the Ariel Square Four.
Early reliability problems had been largely expunged by the late 1950s and a lighter, all steel welded frame had replaced the earlier heavier lugged unit in 1957, while a Siamese exhaust was adopted in 1959. These changes addressed the weight problems and improved the handling, although this was still a heavy motorcycle leading to many of them being chosen for sidecar work where the weight and the torque of the large motor was a big plus point.
Presented in original 1959 trim with the correct coil ignition engine and Siamese exhaust system, 431 UXA looks to be in nicely patinated original condition. The last expired MOT is from 2006, the same year as the V5C shows it to have passed into the ownership of the Stondon Museum.
There are SORN documents from 2006 to 2011 so it is safe to say it has not had any use since its acquisition. Fresh battery, fluids and a thorough check-over should have this machine ready to ride by a lucky new owner.
