Launched at the Cologne Motor Show in 1974, the Goldwing was the top tourer in Honda's range and originally came with a 999cc flat-four engine but this was soon increased to 1,182cc and from 2001 a massive 1,832cc flat-six was also available.

Impressively smooth, quiet and torquey, these giant machines were aimed at the long distance touring motorcyclist and in particular at the ‘big boned’ American rider, and were designed to be luxury mile eaters which gave armchair comfort with every extra that could conceivably be fitted to a two-wheeled machine.

Features that the Goldwing possessed over the years included cruise control, satellite navigation, on board computer, anti-lock braking, six speaker stereo, intercom, heated seat and handlebars etc. More gadgets than most middle-aged bikers could ever hope to master, although the grand kids could probably figure it out in seconds.

This 1985 GL1200 10th Anniversary Limited Edition was produced for the American market only and has a number of features very few machines can boast even today. Imported to the UK in 1993, it has been on display at the Stondon Museum since 2006. Equipment includes computerised fuel injection, cruise control, travel computer, self-cancelling indicators, linked braking system, four-speaker radio cassette, CB radio, self-levelling air suspension and on-board compressor for tyre inflation.

It comes with a fair amount of history detailing maintenance carried out and a run of 11 MOTs from 1995 to 2006 showing an increase of approximately 20,000 miles during this period. The usual precautionary recommissioning is advised before this giant cruiser is returned to the road. If you are going to "head out on the highway looking for adventure" it may as well be in the utmost comfort!
