The Mobylette was a moped manufactured by the French factory Motobecane between 1949 and 1997, selling in huge numbers with some 750,000 per year leaving the factory gates in the peak years of the 1970s and total production estimated at over 14 million.
All Motobecane mopeds are usually referred to as Mobylette, but there were several versions made ranging from basic automatic single speed mopeds to geared sports mopeds. Such was the saturation of the French market with these home produced models that the term ‘Mobylette’ is used in France to refer to almost any make of autocycle, much as the term ‘moped’ is used in the UK. Most models used the single speed automatic transmission Motobecane engine that featured belt driven primary drive and rear chain drive, with a lever being engaged to revert to pedal power alone. Similar machines were produced by the Raleigh concern in the UK and featured the same engines.
There are no registration details for this Mobylette DeLuxe. Six old MOTs chronicle the history from 1967 to 1972. A purchase receipt is on file dating from 1/5/1962 for its original purchase for the sum of £77.0s 11d with all extras including tax and number plates, there are also two service manuals. A letter on file states that the original logbook was retained and a new V5 style logbook was to be issued in 1977, but as this was before the 1984 cut-off date, the registration 849 AHJ is no longer recorded on the DVLA database and will have to be recovered under the V765 scheme.
