Last of the MG T-Series line and arguably the best, the TF was introduced in October 1953.
Although mechanically very similar to its TD predecessor, the provision of a shorter radiator, revised wing line and faired-in headlamps lent it an altogether sportier air. Equipped with rack-and-pinion-steering, independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension and four-wheel drum brakes, the new model helped maintain the marque's 'Safety Fast' reputation.
Initially powered by a twin-carburettor 57bhp 1,250cc XPAG four-cylinder engine, the TF was offered with a 63bhp 1,466cc XPEG motor from November 1954 onwards. Production ended early in April 1955 after 9,600 TFs had been manufactured, of which just 3,400 were the larger 1500 version, virtually all of them being sold into the American market.
According to the BMIHT Certificate, this delightful TF left Abingdon bound for the US painted in black livery. It ended up in Albuquerque, New Mexico before being purchased in 1991 and repatriated back to the UK where it was converted to RHD and given a coat of red paint.
The vendor acquired the car in 1994, using and enjoying it until 2008 when he took it off the road for a professional body-off bare-metal respray. This was completed within the year, a CD on file showing the comprehensive nature of the work done. It emerged in pristine condition, painted in the attractive and original MG TF shade of metallic Almond green.
A large file of bills detail general TLC items, the car being rewired in 2005, fitted with a new water pump in 2010 and getting new shock absorbers in 2012. A further invoice shows that the cylinder head has been converted for use with unleaded petrol. The car comes with a hood frame, ash fittings and hood material which have yet to be fitted as well as side screens which although complete have never been used.
There is a box of spare parts, including its original steering wheel, rocker cover and tappet cover as well as a spare set of hubcaps which although require rechroming, retain the rare MG medallions in the centre.
Sitting on a good set of Pirelli Cinturato tyres, this most impressive looking TF 1500 is as nice an example as we have had the pleasure to offer.
